Why We Started With a Basement Full of Good Stuff and Zero Regrets
JennyMarie MartinThe business origin story you usually hear goes something like this: visionary founder identifies market gap, builds solution, disrupts industry. Ours goes like this: we had too much good stuff and not enough space.
That's it. That's the origin story.
The basement was the business plan
Years of collecting - vintage finds, quality pieces, things we loved and then forgot about - had turned our basement and closets into a very well-curated storage problem. Nothing in there was junk. That was actually the issue. If it had been junk, we would have thrown it out. Instead it was good stuff, sitting in the dark, being useful to nobody.
At some point the math became obvious. Someone out there needs exactly what's collecting dust down here. We have the means to connect those two things. Why aren't we doing that?
So we started.
What we didn't expect
We didn't expect to love it. We thought it would feel like a side hustle - something we did for the extra income and tolerated the rest of the time. Instead it felt like the most natural extension of something we were already doing. We were already hunting for good things. We were already curating. We were already making Salt & Thorn bath salts in small batches because we wanted a product that actually worked.
The store just gave all of that a place to live.
The part that surprised us most
People respond to realness. We didn't build a brand strategy before we launched. We just told the truth about who we are and why we started. And that - more than any marketing tactic - is what connects with people.
You don't have to be a visionary to build something worth building. You just have to be honest about what you have, who you are, and why it matters.
Where we are now
Still working full time. Still hunting for good pieces. Still making bath salts by hand in Rocky Mount, Virginia. Still building - slowly, deliberately, without apology.
The basement is a little less full. The store is a little more stocked. And we have zero regrets about starting with exactly what we had.
That turns out to be enough.
